Background of the Study:
In today’s digital age, social media has transformed how information is disseminated and consumed, particularly in the realm of education. In Unguwar Rimi Local Government Area, Kaduna State, social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools that shape parental perceptions of early childhood education. Parents increasingly rely on online sources to gather information, share experiences, and influence opinions about educational practices and policies (Perez, 2023). Social media not only provides a platform for exchanging ideas but also offers a forum for advocacy and community building, enabling parents to voice their concerns and expectations regarding the quality of early childhood education.

The influence of social media on parental perceptions is multifaceted. On one hand, it offers immediate access to a wealth of information, ranging from expert opinions to real-life experiences shared by other parents, which can help in making informed decisions about their children’s education. On the other hand, the rapid spread of misinformation and unverified content poses significant challenges, potentially skewing parental perceptions and leading to unrealistic expectations or undue criticism of educational institutions (King, 2024). In Unguwar Rimi, where digital connectivity is on the rise, social media has become a critical medium through which educational narratives are shaped, impacting how parents view the effectiveness, safety, and overall quality of early childhood education.

The dynamic nature of social media platforms means that parental perceptions can change rapidly, influenced by trending topics, viral posts, and online debates. This fluidity can both empower parents by giving them a voice in educational matters and create uncertainty by propagating conflicting information. Moreover, the interactive nature of these platforms encourages parents to engage directly with educators and policymakers, thereby fostering a more transparent dialogue about the challenges and successes within the education sector (Scott, 2025). However, the dual-edged influence of social media necessitates a critical examination of its role in shaping parental attitudes, particularly in areas where community trust and educational quality are at stake. This study aims to explore how social media influences parental perceptions of early childhood education in Unguwar Rimi Local Government Area, analyzing both the positive and negative implications of digital engagement on educational decision-making (Perez, 2023).

Statement of the Problem :
Despite its potential to empower parents, social media has also emerged as a source of controversy in shaping perceptions of early childhood education in Unguwar Rimi Local Government Area. Many parents are exposed to conflicting information, where credible educational advice is intermingled with misinformation and sensationalized opinions. This confluence of diverse narratives creates confusion and may lead to misinformed decisions regarding their children’s education (King, 2024). The rapid dissemination of unverified content can undermine trust in established educational institutions and policies, prompting parents to question the quality and safety of early childhood programs.

Furthermore, while social media provides an accessible platform for parental engagement, the lack of regulation and fact-checking mechanisms means that negative experiences and isolated incidents can be disproportionately amplified. Such amplification often distorts public opinion and creates an environment where criticism may overshadow the positive contributions of educators and school administrations. The resulting mistrust not only affects parental choices but also has broader implications for the community’s support for educational reforms and initiatives. The problem is compounded by a lack of systematic research on the extent to which social media shapes these perceptions in the local context of Unguwar Rimi, leaving educational stakeholders with limited data to inform policy and practice (Scott, 2025).

This study seeks to address the gap by examining the role of social media in shaping parental perceptions of early childhood education. It aims to identify the key drivers of both positive and negative perceptions and assess how these digital interactions influence parental engagement with educational institutions. Understanding these dynamics is critical for developing strategies to mitigate the spread of misinformation and enhance constructive communication between parents, educators, and policymakers (Perez, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To investigate the extent of social media usage among parents in Unguwar Rimi Local Government Area regarding early childhood education.
  2. To evaluate the impact of social media on shaping parental perceptions of early childhood education quality and safety.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving the accuracy and effectiveness of educational information shared on social media.

Research Questions:

  1. How does social media influence parental perceptions of early childhood education in Unguwar Rimi?
  2. What are the predominant themes in social media discussions related to early childhood education?
  3. What strategies can mitigate the negative impacts of misinformation on parental perceptions?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Increased social media engagement is associated with heightened concerns about early childhood education quality.
  2. H2: Positive social media interactions correlate with greater trust in early childhood educational institutions.
  3. H3: Misinformation on social media significantly distorts parental perceptions of early childhood education.

Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it sheds light on the influence of social media on parental perceptions of early childhood education in Unguwar Rimi Local Government Area. The findings will inform educators, policymakers, and community leaders on how digital platforms shape public opinion, enabling the development of targeted strategies to promote accurate information and foster trust in educational institutions. By addressing the challenges of misinformation, the study aims to contribute to a more informed and supportive community environment for early learners (Perez, 2023; King, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the influence of social media on parental perceptions of early childhood education in Unguwar Rimi Local Government Area, Kaduna State. It does not extend to other digital platforms or regions beyond this locality.
